Re: Support to Stichting Veldwerk, for aid to disadvantaged women and children and an environmentally friendly working method in a developing country

Dear Reader,

With this letter we, Stichting Veldwerk, would like to draw your attention to our work in Nepal. We feel free to write you about this because we believe that our concept of development aid in Nepal is a unique one. In this letter we will give you a short outline.
Stichting Veldwerk has been founded by René Veldt and aims to offer small-scale and direct aid to underprivileged children (street-children, orphan-children and disabled-children) and deprived women in Nepal. In The Netherlands René worked with disabled people, but resigned his job in 1999 and sold his house, car and goods. He learned that he could be more valuable in Nepal, one of the poorest countries in the world.
Ever since he was working in Nepal and slowly but certainly built a reliable network to set up and implement several small-scale and environment-friendly projects together with the Nepali people. A research of UNICEF showed that thousands of children in Nepal wander homeless. With a local partner from Nepal, René have rented a house in Kathmandu, the capital of Nepal, to offer lodging, feeding and education to a number of these children. This children's home is managed by skilled Nepalese women, who lived on the street with their children earlier themselves

Our slogan is: offering support for and with the Nepali people to all kinds of small-scale, structured and transparent projects, at which the environmental aspects are of considerable importance. From the Netherlands René is supported by a board that cooperates voluntarily in the realisation of all plans of Stichting Veldwerk Nepal (SVN). This board also looks after promotion (such as managing the Internet site) and the recruitment of money. The unique factor of our foundation hides in the fact that René Veldt himself is a minimum of 10 months per year working in Nepal and therefore directly supervising the financial expenses. Once or twice a year René is for a short period in Holland to give lectures and information about his work in Nepal.

Currently SVN started a new cooperation with NGO Bal Kshetra Nepal (BKN), her Nepalese partner and acquired the I-NGO status. Together with this partner SVN realises the project Hamro Gaun (meaning: Our village) in the beautiful village Sankhu, in the Kathmandu valley. This becomes a unique eco-friendly village that bulges with activities and will have an example function in the neighbourhood. A closer description will be found on our Internet site.
Meanwhile; the 35 children who where accommodated in Kathmandu have been moved to a temporary quarter in Sankhu. In 2007 SVN is building a new children's home and after that approximately 50 children can be accommodated, including 10 physically disabled. Further SVN guarantees that each child will have a study or practical training and a social future. The children are not released from "Hamro Gaun” until they can lead an independent life in Nepal, after completing there study or vocational training.
For this project much money is needed on an annual basis. On the marvellous situated country side, the size of a football field, also a contact centre (a kind of day-nursery), a job training centre for under privileged women and a farm have been planned. The annual exploitation costs for all these buildings with their specific activities will be considerable. For this reason we ask your support for our activities in Nepal.

Hamro Niwas

Beside this large project SVN participates in other projects, which are all small-scale, structured and transparent. Nepalese men or women have the final responsibility for the activities with children and women.

Why does this letter have Sustainability as a subject?

For SVN sustainability means offering chances at short and long notice to children who, to Nepalese standards, live in an underdeveloped situation. Hereby one could think of street- orphans- and disabled children, but also young people who are still living at home, but are unable to study or to complete their study successfully. We only let our children and students go if they have finished their study in one way or the other and if they can really take care of themselves. This also applies to the women whom we help, first a practical training (possibly also with literacy), then maybe a micro-loan if necessary. In that case we do supply a loan and help them setting up their own small business or shop. Only after they have built themselves a stable life to look after their children they will leave the project. All projects take into account the nature and the natural surroundings. SVN wants to operate in balance with nature by eco-friendly living in a magnificent country with its beautiful people by showing respect for people in their surroundings, their habits, construction style and way of life. We adapt to Nepal and not the other way around. SVN goes for a lasting relationship with people and their surroundings.

What can you or your company mean for Stichting Veldwerk? ?

Nowadays almost everyone is involved with sustainability or social responsibility.
Our project in the Kathmandu valley is an example of development aid, the way it should be to our opinion. Small-scale, transparency, environment-friendly, conducted by its own population in local Nepalese style. The foundation of our new buildings are built earthquake shockproof, energy supplies come from its own hydro-electric power station or from biogas facilities, the kitchen retrieves the energy from the solar system and the dirty water is filtered by means of a special Cane/helophyte filter and is 'delivered' clean and clear to the river which flows behind our property.
We therefore appeal to your support for our work in Nepal, in sympathy with people who must live their life in much less prosperous circumstances.

This is possible!

Most of the global companies have a gratification policy. Possibly there is an end-of-year bonus. It also becomes custom to offer your employees a Christmas present. Perhaps you and/or your employees discussed the subject of ending the year with a nice gesture. Instead of the end-of-year bonus or presents, did you ever thought of giving an amount to some good purpose, such as our children and women in Nepal? We have been told that some employees are prepared to work their last hour or afternoon of the year for free and donate to a good purpose. You possibly could promote this in your company.

Stichting Veldwerk Nepal could be your good cause this year!

By means of the biennial newsletter by mail, we might inform you about the progress of our work in Nepal. Our Internet site also gives you the last updated information directly from Nepal. In this way you can follow our performances closely.
Besides René Veldt is always prepared to give lectures at your company when he visits Holland or other countries.

We truly hope that you will consider supporting Stichting Veldwerk
