Generous gift

Niek, a friend of mine in Kathmandu, wanted to introduce me to a man she knew that was interested in contributing to one or the other project in Nepal. “Stop by at Christmas eve” Niek told me, “so we can have a chat about it!”

And so we did; at Christmas Eve 2003 the three of us met for diner at a restaurant in Kathmandu. During our meal of stuffed turkey I talked about my work for the orphans.

David has been going back and forth between Nepal and Canada to export goods which he sells through his wholesale business and his shop. And he expressed his wish to do more for the people in Nepal and share part of his profits with those who are a lot worse off then the people in the west.

“What does an employee in your children home make for a living”, he asked. Well, I told him our staffs get a normal Nepali salary which is 3.500 rupees per month, so times 12 makes 42.000 rupees per year.

The next day David visited our children home and donated the amount of 42.000 rupees, his contribution for the welfare of our children in Hamro Niwas.
