Fire-extinguisher for the children home from the Shoestring Nepal group.

Claudy te Boome At the beginning of April I received a message that misses Claudy te Boome a tour leader from the Shoestring travelling, Amsterdam was looking for Mr. Veldt and the children's home Hamro Niwas in Kathmandu. I met her and she told me that in her group where some of the people who had brought some clothes for the children and that they where interested in having a look at the children's home. That's possible and pleasant of course.

We made an agreement, and the next day a group of ten people came by the visit the children's home at this point in time the children's home was still in Thamel, the tourist area of Kathmandu so easy to find.

I always give a little tour through the house while the nice Nepali tea is brewing and after the tour the questions arise. The visitors are always glad to see that the children are being cared for after seeing the children on the streets looking dirty and wearing torn clothing and mostly with bare feet, even in the middle of the night!

"And what can you do about it" everybody thinks, it's not that you can change everyone's lives but you have to start somewhere.

The visitors where happy to see that somebody took the initiative (and it is a Dutch guy!) Some of the people brought some clothes and shoes for us. That made me, our Didi's and especially the children very happy.

In brief, the visitors from Shoestring where very impressed with what we are doing here for these children, they further showed that by donating some money when they left.
Before I realised, they all put some money in my hand, all together it was 10,000 rupees. So now I was the one who was a bit confused.

Nieuwe Brandblussers I didn't just wanted to use this money for our daily budget, but wanted buy something from our wishing list. And that's a big list, far to big but you never know. In this case, for that amount of amount I could buy exactly 3 fire-extinguishers, a big one for the kitchen and two smaller ones for every floor to be placed next to the bedroom door.

Last winter, when it was very cold, in front off my very eye's the Didi who was cooking suddenly caught fire, she stood too close to the stove with her heads calf on. In know time her back and hairs were on fire, but by acting quick I extinguish the fire and the Didi, this was for me the call to ensure we had fire extinguishers. With so many children in the house you can not take any risk's.

tekst These fire-extinguishers are good quality and last very long time, after 5 years they have to be refilled which is possible. It was a great gift from our visitors and well spent I think.
Many thanks on behalf of our children to the Shoestring travellers and their tour leader, Claudy te Boome.
