Last week the inauguration of a new income training programme for unprivileged women in the Chitwan area took place.
It concerns a job training project on the field of sewing and stitching. Twenty women are selected to join this programme.
The project is performed by the Ngo WSTP, in consultation with and with the help of the local organization Helpful Woman Development Community Ratnanagar.
The project in total will be managed and financed by Stichting Veldwerk the Netherlands and Melania Asia Foundation.
René Veldt, Stichting Veldwerk, action speak louder then words!
Two weeks after the official opening, I went back to visit Chitwan to see how the things were going. Well, I think the pictures show enough. The Sewing machines were installed and the women were working hard.
In the morning ten women start working at 7 am and work untills 9 am. And in the afternoon the women start working at noon until 2 pm. The first examples are ready and the women are really motivated to make beautiful things out of textile.
Actions speak louder than words, also in Chitwan!

The training programme is based in Ratnanagar, Tadibazar. From that place and four other surrounding villages five groups of four women are selected who will be trained in sewing clothes six days a week, during 6 months.
In the morning shift ten women attend the course, same as in the afternoon. For this project five USHA sewing machines have been purchased so two women can work with one sewing machine. At the end of the programme each group of four women can take one machine to their place of residence to start a tailor shop of their own.
The idea is that two women work together in the morning and the other two in the afternoon. By doing this, the shop will be opened all day round and each woman has enough time to do their daily duties like taking care of their children, housekeeping and working in the field. The sewing machine has to be paid back within one year after the training is finished, for each woman this is nearly 15$. The women will be trained in starting their business by the project coordinator Anita Thapa. We are planning to start the tailor shop beside the school because all students are in need of uniforms, so the centre of business is there!
The organisation has deliberately chosen to select the women from five different villages so that they won't compete with each other after the training. The women are from lower casts and/or are dealing with other problematic situations.
With this programme they have a good opportunity to escape from their hopeless and poor situation and to build up a respectable living for themselves and their children.
The inauguration of the project was a very happy occasion, look here for the pictures, including a few pictures one week after.

The official opening from this new project above was on 21 August 2005

Twenty underprivileged women on their way to a better future, it's for me such a wonderful feeling to be part of this project.
