Christmas Newsletter 2002,

Hello Everybody,
The newsletter at the end of the year about the work of "Stichting Veldwerk in far and cold Nepal"

No, here in the city and the valley it doesn't really freeze, or any rain or snow. But in the mountains it is very cold!! Snow, avalanches means ensuring that you are on time in the lodge when you are out there trekking. A lot of family's and children are coming down from the mountains during the winter, and looking for some welfare in the city.
Many don't find any thing and you can see them early in the morning and at night warming themselves with little fires. Myself, I'm walking around in layers of cloth and sleeping under my electrical blanket.
The children from Hamro Niwas
The children in the home have a much better life than the children on the streets or at the riverbanks, but it is still cold for them and they are suffering from flu and colds. As a Christmas gift I will buy some electrical heaters tomorrow, it is really too cold now. The house is shaded by my neighbor's house. Because of this in wintertime we don't get any sun at all and foggy nights and mornings means it's Very cold.
Industriously I'm looking for a bigger but also warmer house a house situated in the daytime sun can warm up a bit which helps to provide some heat for the early part of the evening. I went to look at some house's to buy but they are far above our budget. Besides buying we also have to decorate it.
The children are going to school and they need uniforms and the staff's needs to be paid a salary. In short daily business goes on and our budget is not adequate enough. The houses are quit expensive because we like to have a play area where they can run around after a long day at school. But with a little help we can do a lot. We really need to leave this house as soon as possible. Help us to help…..???

In general the children are doing fine besides the cold and some sickness. Everybody that comes and visit's are immediately attached to our little darlings and as the visitors leave we really have to count the children to check they haven't hidden in one of their suitcases or bags. Ok, may be a bit over reacting, but really they are cute. We have a lot of visitors, and on the web site I made a special addition with particular details of this. Look at "events at the children's home" and then "visitors"!

Trainee at Hamro Niwas
In the last period our 2 trainee's Ophelie and Lien from Belgium have been testing the children to ascertain their strengths and weaknesses. We made a history plan about all the children and with these details we can provide a programme that ensures the best possible future.
Sita Tamang is a Lilliputian girl who is a dwarf and is suffering with a bad back condition we took her to have a medical check-up to see if anything could be done to overcome her disorder. She is now wearing a brace to help straighten her spine, which will hopefully result in a better future for her. We also provided a medical check-up for Mohan a boy with very bad eyesight in one eye and one lazy eye. Following his check-up it was found that he required surgery and he will be operated on soon to correct the impairment in one of his eyes, and new glasses to improve the other. Dinanath Kapri is the oldest boy, he is 14 now, and is an excellent student. He wants to become a computer technician and we are trying to help him fulfill his dream.
These are just some examples of children who we have helped and are in our care for today and for the future.
Winter cloths and a fusion show
When I was in Holland I asked a lot of people and groups to bring some warm winter clothes for the children if they came and visited Nepal. Luckily a lot of people helped us. One month ago we divided the clothes amongst the children and what was left we gave to other children's homes. When we where giving the clothes to the children, they where so happy it almost looked like a fashion show. The next day we organized a real fashion show on the rooftop all the volunteers helped us and it became one big party.
This you can also find under "events at the children's home" on the site.
The volunteers
Besides Ophelie and Lien there are more volunteers active; Eefje van der Linden and Suzan Verstegen where together with Willeke van Rijn teaching on a boarding school a bit outside the city. Their main job was teaching the teachers English, because their English is also quiet poor. I think this is important, we can teach the children English and when they leave us to gain further education their teachers English is often of a poorer standard that that of the children's therefore setting them back in their development. So our main task is to teach the teacher and then the students. At the moment we are not working at the school we will go back at a later date and continue our work. There was a big fare well for the lady volunteers will also be on our site at "project". They also made a big donation by giving play- and work material for the school. This material was in conceivable for the Principal.
Our Jobtrainingsproject Jyoti for street children in Pokhara,
is running very well at the moment. After 7 months from the 30 students with a very tough background, only 2 children left. One girl who decided one day to get married and left with her husband to India, and one boy who didn't want to conform. Not to bad is it?
The past couple of weeks the ex- street children where in the middle of their exams they where very focused and nervous.
Two groups from Holland brought tools from Gered Gereedschap (tools for self reliance) with them, so we are almost complete now. We delivered the tools last week in Pokhara. It is always good to see the surprised faces when they see all the good tools. Almost like real Santa Claus!
Resume;
With in the political situation and poor circumstances, the never ending bureaucracy and the corruption in Nepal, I have to say that our slogan "no words, just do" is working.
But this wouldn't have happened without the support of the many volunteers here and in Holland/Belgium. And of course the people that donated. I want to thank all the people that helped us with our work any form of help is greatly appreciated. A couple of our sponsor activity's are on the web site, this you can find under "sponsors".
I wish you all a good start to the New Year. We will continue our work here and go and find a bigger and much warmer house for our children.
