A lot is going on in Nepal, especially the people war between the Mao's and the government's army, resulting in so many victims.
As a tourist you won't mention a lot, except the long queue at military check posts or at time when the Mao's announce a new Bhanda (strike) and daily life comes to a rest. Even than tourists are allowed to use the bicycle, but as schools are closed there is no use of getting there to teach. Compared to reality these are small problems.
Every day some 20 to 30 people die, as in all wars, mostly soldiers. Men, good and bad ones, die, leaving wives and children helpless and devastated behind.
Nowadays the Mao's are getting out of control in their own country, fighting their own brothers and sisters. Now opposition against these so called Robin Hoods is given by local people.
Stichting Veldwerk tries to find solutions for these severe problems, as children without parents finally end up in the streets or even worse. Street life causes severe traumas to the children and it is almost impossible to get them recovered from this.
One of the main topics is education, especially as education is out of the question for so many Nepali children. Our Contact Centre is a first step to solve this problem. Besides education these poor children have a daily meal, tea and fresh water which are also very important. On World Food day it said in the newspaper that 47% of the children in Nepal less than 5 years are malnourished
Last year also some 5000 children died from measles. Children even die from dehydration after having diarrhoea. It is impossible in our Western world but here it is still common.
The worst of all is that innocent people and children are involved in these fights.
In Nepal it is almost impossible for a woman without husband to take care of herself and her children.
Within the cast systems women have hardly any rights, such as education.
Above picture shows a widow crying out loud as here husband died in a gunfight. His bus drove right into the fights. This woman faces an utmost insecure future, without any governmental help or protection.
Also children of poor families are often sold for adoption, child labour or prostitution.
Stichting Veldwerk is looking for solutions to help these single women with their problems.
Regarding this subject, we join some local groups who are fighting for the rights of women.
So still a lot of work has to be done in this part of the world.
