Education for all the children of Hamro Niwas

klaar om naar school te gaan Yep, since the 15th of April, all of our 30 children are attending school. They leave the house every morning at 9.15 and walk for 15 minutes to school. While doing this, they are being watched by our delivery boy Ramesh, who is also our janitor and kitchen help - he drops the children of at school and picks them up at the end of the day. While doing this he wears a red signal jacket because they have to cross the public road with a big group and we don't want to take any risk with the Nepali traffic!

ochtend exersitie op het school plein The school day begins with an exercise on the playground, a ceremony accompanied by the sound of a big drum. The lessons start after that and around noon there is a lunchbreak. All the children get a little lunchbox to take with them to school - one day it contains fruit, the other day biscuits or fried rice. At around half past four the children return home again.

The fact that they go to school every day is of course good for them, and also for the three head members of staff at our childrens' home, it gives them time to relax a little and to do all the things in and around the house that they don't have time for when the children are there.

The three children that came in last are described in the school just in time, after the 15th of april the admission period stays open for three more weeks, after those weeks it is finished, no exceptions, admission closed!!! The last girl that we took in, Samjana, was in fact four days too late, but as a high exception and because we have a lot of children in the school, they decided to let her in. It made us very happy because we couldn't stand the thought of having this girl sitting alone during the day for a whole year. The teacher wasn't that welcoming (that strange girl with only one eye) but she is going to school every day now, which feels like a little victory.

The youngest of our children are attending the nursery class, which is of a pretty good quality in this school, compared with Nepali standards. The older children are attending different classes and levels. This goverment school even has a small computer class, but our children can't be in that class yet, since that is only for the highest levels. The fact that our children get daily computerlessons in our house makes up for this loss. Working with the means that we have, and the situations that the children came from, we still try to give them as much of an all-round education as possible which increases their opportunities in the job market when they grow up.

Parbati achter de computer in ons kinderhuis Mara van de Ven organised this computer class and also brought a lot of educational CD-ROMS from London. At this time Chantal ten Have has taken over the computer lessons from Mara. The supplies to make this class possible are sponsored by Wil Mosk from Armas Europe. On behalf of us and the children of Hamro Niwas we want to thank all the volunteers and Wil Mosk for making this possible.
