The date is the 24th of June 2003, it's been already 7 weeks since we left the suffocating house in Thamel and moved to a bigger, cleaner and much more pretty house in a peaceful area in Kathmandu.
Two new children arrived last week, two sisters by the age of 4 and 8 years. Their mother died and their father couldn't manage taking care of both. Because there was also no money for education the two sisters sat the whole day in a dirty little slum while their father went out to try and make some money.
"Siiiir……, thank you very much he"
Kloink!
I almost choked……. I regained myself by answering quickly with
I didn't see that coming at all but when I thought about it a little longer I realised that it was all the people who she couldn't see at this moment, volunteering in our organisation or collecting money, and the people who are willing to giving there money, she should thank.
These kids were in a position that it was likely they would end up in the child labour or worse. So, when we heard there story we decided to take them in.
At this moment they're being well fed, having clean clothes and receiving education. Now and then their father is able to visit them and when things are looking better in the future they might be able to return to their home.
Last week we were sitting on the floor of the living room enjoying our dinner. In Nepal it is very common to sit on the floor and eat with your hands. A chair, fork and knife would probably spoil the taste of the food, even they don't know how to use it. This is quite cosy with 25 children and four members of the staff.
What we had for dinner? Rice off course, two times a day, with a spoon of vegetables, dressed with a soup of lentils. Saturday this all is joined by a little peace of chicken which makes it a feast meal for Nepali people.
On this night, suddenly the oldest one of the little sisters says, while she's eating from her big plate:
“you are most welcome, and enjoy your food!”
So, this is what we are working for, things like this little girl who suddenly is able to live a save life and realises that she is happy. That is why I should pass trough the gratefulness this child showed, sitting on the floor of her new home, and share it with all the people who made it possible for her to sit there.
No Say's, just do's at the other end of the world!
And on behalf of me and all the children, thank you all very much!
